Psychotherapy in Nottingham and Grantham

Welcome to Elevated Therapy Psychotherapy. My name is Michael Millett and I am a professionally trained and fully qualified, accredited and experienced integrative psychotherapist practising in a convenient Central Grantham location (Dudley Road). I offer morning, daytime and evening appointments 7 days per week from 10am to late some evenings to individuals and couples.
In addition I also offer telephone and secure online therapy sessions via Skype.
There comes a time in many people's lives when they begin to wonder whether they need some sort of help and therapy.
What is the difference between Psychotherapy and Counselling?
First of all - in practice "Psychotherapy" and "Counselling" are terms that are often used interchangeably by people including therapists themselves.
Although they are very similar, it has to be said that there are some determinative differences as well.
Traditionally, "counselling" is generally used to denote a relatively brief treatment and short-term help to clients that is focused mostly upon behaviour. It often targets a particular symptom or problematic situation and offers suggestions and advice for dealing with it.
"Psychotherapy" on the other hand is generally a longer term treatment which focuses more on gaining deeper insight into chronic physical and emotional problems. It's focus is on the client's thought processes and way of being in the world rather than specific problems.
Generally speaking, however, psychotherapy requires more skill. While a psychotherapist is qualified to provide counselling, a counsellor may or may not possess the necessary training and skills to provide psychotherapy.
Why do people seek counselling or psychotherapy?
There are many reasons why people undergo psychotherapy and counselling - for example when they feel stuck in their life or trapped in an unsatisfactory job or unfulfilling relationship.
People also seek out therapy when they are facing, or trying to get over a major crisis in their life.
Other triggers that prompt people to seek therapy are when they:
- are unhappy and unfulfilled.
- feel anxious and fearful.
- feel they should be getting more out of life.
- feel stressed and experience their lives as chaotic and out of control.
- have a phobia that is becoming more and more debilitating.
- have recently had a major trauma in their lives such as a car accident, loss of a loved one, termination of employment, diagnosed with a serious illness and many more life tragedies.
- have family problems, for example when they are trying to juggle the demands of a job, marriage, children and elderly parents.
- sexuality issues.
I can offer you a choice of either short-term or longer-term counselling and psychotherapy which will be tailored to match your specific needs and requirements. I provide a quiet, safe, confidential, non-judgemental space where you can explore your difficulties and, with my professional help, achieve the changes in your life you wish to make.
Psychotherapy sessions with me in Grantham create this safe space in which you can feel listened to, respected and supported. This allows the working through of whatever is troubling you in a confidential and professional environment.
Psychotherapy generally involves a more in-depth exploration of the issues involved and with the exception of short-term goal focused psychotherapy, it generally extends over a longer period of time than regular counselling.
Short term goal focused psychotherapy or Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) is a short term goal-focused psychotherapeutic approach which seeks to isolate the issues which are generating particular feelings and/or symptoms and focuses on helping you change by finding solutions rather than investigating problems. Articulating what the impact of positive changes will be like on your life is often more important than understanding what led to the problem with this approach.
In some cases SFBT is all that is needed for a particular problem. In other cases, short term work brings to consciousness a realisation that the problem has deeper roots than at first thought.
Of course, everyone has the ability to change; the solutions are often already present in the individual's life which is the basis for ongoing change.
Longer term explorative psychotherapy works on deeper, more unconscious issues and personal development at depth. It involves a process of collaborative exploration. It is about uprooting the issues underlying the problems you are experiencing, thereby enabling resolution and facilitating growth.
Dr. Michael G Millett is a qualified and practicing psychotherapist and completed his psychotherapy training in 1995 in integrative psychotherapy (mixed model) and is a member of the
National Association of Counsellors, Hypnotherapists and Psychotherapists and holds a professional fellowship with the Counselling Society, a Learned Society which promotes groups of academic disciplines.
What is Integrative Psychotherapy?
Integrative Psychotherapy takes into account many views of human functioning.
The psychodynamic, client-centered, cognitive, behaviourist, family therapy, Gestalt therapy, body-psychotherapies, object relations theories, psychoanalytic self psychology and transactional analysis approaches are all considered within a dynamic systems viewpoint within Integrative Psychotherapy.
Therefore, the term "Integrative Psychotherapy" has a few meanings. It refers to the process of integrating the whole personality and person such as taking disowned, unaware or unresolved aspects of the self and making them part of a combined personality and reducing the use of defense mechanisms that block spontaneity and evolution.
Without this process, one has limited flexibility in problem solving, health maintenance and relating to people and being in the world fully.
Subsequently, Integrative Psychotherapy creates an understanding of the social and transpersonal aspects of the systems surrounding the person.
It is holistic as in the process of making whole.
The aim of integrative psychotherapy then is to promote wholeness such that the quality of the client's being and functioning in the intrapsychic, interpersonal and sociopolitical sphere is augmented with due positive regard for each individual's own personal limits and external forces in their world.
An initial assessment with Michael provides him with the opportunity to look at the problems you are experiencing in the context of your background and whether counselling or psychotherapy is an appropriate treatment for you.
He will determine what other support you might need and whether you both can work together.
Most sessions are an hour duration and are in person or can be conducted by telephone and Skype.
